The Zawiyat al-Aryan pyramid field lies roughly midway between Giza and North Saqqara and about 3.5km from the Sun Temples of Abu Ghurab at Abu Sir, and can be seen if you ride across the desert. Both its pyramids are sanded over and scarcely worth a detour, but Egyptologists still ponder their place in the evolution of pyramid-building. The northerly Unfinished Pyramid makes extensive use of granite, suggesting that it might hail from the IV Dynasty, but never got beyond its foundations and enclosure wall - unfinished blocks and stone chippings are scattered all around. To the southeast lies a Layer Pyramid built of small stone blocks, which seems to have been intended as a step pyramid and thus presumably belongs to the III Dynasty.
