The Jewish cemetery of Al-Basatin lies 3km beyond El-Khalifa (minibus #54 or bus #160/ from Midan Tahrir; bus #72 from Midan Ramses; or minibus #57 from Midan Ataba). Tens of thousands of graves, up to nine hundred years old, have been stripped of their marble slabs, while squatters have occupied any mausolea going (Al-Basatin has few of these compared to the Muslim and Coptic cemeteries). During the late 1980s, the elders of Cairo's depleted Jewish community agreed to accept US$80,000 in return for allowing a highway to be ploughed through Al-Basatin. When foreign rabbis intervened, the whole affair acquired diplomatic overtones and turned into a massive legal wrangle.
