During the 1950s, a slice of Shubra al-Balad was developed as a separate residential and commercial district, named "Farag's Orchard" after its previous role. The name remains appropriate, since Rod el-Farag hosts Cairo's largest fruit and vegetable market , Abu el-Farag. Like the others, it's the exclusive preserve of one of two cabals of wholesalers. In Rod el-Farag's case, they hail from the villages around the capital, whereas elsewhere Saiyidis from Upper Egypt may control trade. The modern Port of Cairo is another local source of wealth with a shady underside.
