The extensive grounds which Deschamps laid out for Ismail's palace are now divided into Cairo's Zoological Garden - which is packed on Fridays and public holidays, but fun to visit at other times - and the smaller El-Urman Garden . The bridge is named after Cairo University , which was founded in 1908 as a counterweight to traditionalist Al-Azhar but has never been any the less political. Access to its scattered faculties is controlled by Central Security, so foreigners may need a letter of introduction (or at least their passport) to pass beyond the gates. Aside from making student friends, morbid curiosity might inspire a visit to the Agricultural Faculty, near the bottom of Sharia Gameat al-Qahira. Occupying a former palace of Mohammed Ali, its basement holds remnants of his torture chamber.
