Housed in a white-domed villa close to the Cairo Marriott, the newly-opened Museum of Islamic Ceramics (Tues-Thur, Sat & Sun 10am-1pm & 6-9pm, Fri 10am-1pm; free) is one of Cairo's most agreeable museums. Built by Prince Amru Abrahim in the late nineteenth century, the structure itself is worth a look for its elaborate marble inlays and floors, while the collection inside contains pieces from Egypt, Persia, Syria, Turkey, Morocco, Iraq and even Andalucia, ranging from the seventh century to the present. The illustrated guidebook (GBPE25) explains each piece in English and also gives a thorough account of the history of Islamic ceramics. Downstairs there's a museum of fine art (same hours; free) that exhibits original paintings and sculptures as well as prints by modern Egytian artists such as Asraf and Alzamzami. All the works exhibited are for sale.
