Beyond the Al-Sudan ring road lies Bulaq al-Dakhrour , an unplanned sprawl of ramshackle dwellings built by migrant fellaheen from Upper Egypt and the Delta. Devoid of any proper sewage network (like parts of Imbaba and Giza), the neighbourhood is a sanitary inspector's nightmare. While some houses have cesspits, many households empty their waste into the drainage canals whose water is used by others for washing or drinking. Installing sewers here is merely one of the challenges facing the Cairo Wastewater Organization. Bulaq al-Dakhrour ends at the Maryotteya Canal , beyond which the village of Kerdassa precedes another canal before the strip of luxury hotels ( Movenpick Jol lie-Ville, Ramada Renaissance, Oasis) along the Desert Road to Alexandria.
