Fayoum Oasis , 100km southwest of Cairo, is a great place to escape. Though Fayoum City holds little appeal, you can walk from its centre into lush countryside within half an hour. Irrigated by water wheels and canals, the Fayoum was a major centre during the Middle Kingdom, Ptolemaic and Roman times, as evinced by various ruins around its periphery. While some involve bumpy rides into the desert, others are reasonably accessible from Fayoum City by local bus or service taxi, with a pleasant walk to the site itself. The ruins of Karanis lie just off the Fayoum-Cairo road; the dramatic "Collapsed Pyramid" of Maidum a short ride from El-Wasta. Both sites are usually deserted, in blissful contrast to Giza and Saqqara. Either makes a good day excursion, but you should bring food and drink and be on your way by mid-morning. Service taxis from Midan Giza are the fastest way of reaching Fayoum City (2hr).
