Better still than 26th July Street for eating and drinking is Sharia Alfi Bey , two blocks north of - known by locals as the Cairene Champs-Elysees. At one end is Midan Orabi , frequented round-the-clock by Cairenes noshing on falafel and kebabs bought from one of the many takeaways here. Walking down from here you'll find the Alfi Bey restaurant, opposite a dirt-cheap 24-hour taamiya joint called Akher Sa'a (next door to the Nile Christian Bookshop), and further along the street a wonderfully relaxed bar inside the Windsor Hotel. Opposite the hotel entrance are two funky Arab cafes. Though perfectly safe late at night, the backstreets that link these thoroughfares retain an aura of illicit goings-on. When Lawrence Durrell and his wife were evacuated from Greece to Cairo in 1941, they discovered that their refugee hotel here doubled as a brothel.
